Out-of-town event at the Waskehegan Staging Area of
Cooking Lake-Blackfoot Provincial Recreation Area

This is the second event in the AB Compass Series

Event goes RAIN or SHINE. Bring extra shoes and socks to change into afterwards. Weather forecast
on-the-day REGISTRATION & STARTS from 1PM until 2PM at the shelter on the east side of the parking lot. All those registering on-the-day are required to fill out and sign a lilac waiver. Beginner instruction available during this time.
FINISH no later than 4PM
Terrain: large undulating grazing fields surrounded by fences. with some areas of woods and wet areas.
Map scale (with contour interval 2.5m) :
1:7,500 for TD2
1:10,000 TD3;

Courses:
Distances are as-the-crow-flies and do NOT include :
– for the TD2 & TD3 the 1.8km walk to the start (and 1.4km back from the finish).
– for the advanced courses 1.4km to the finish and a further 1.6km on to the start.
TD2 Beginner/Novice – Open 2 (anyone) – Controls on linear features (such as fences, paths, vegetation edge, edge of lake) with simple route choices. 2.8km in a pasture surrounded by a fence.
For AB Compass Series points: F/M 12 and under, F/M 13 and over+*
TD3 Intermediate – Open 3 (anyone) – controls off-trail, but with good attack points and catching features. 4.6km including climbing over one fence and though others.
For AB Compass Series points: F/M 12 and under, F/M 13 and over*
Short Advanced technically difficult 4.7km Open 4 (anyone) or
for AB Compass Series F/M 13-14, F/M 15-16, F/M 17-20, F/M 21+, F/M 35+, F/M 45+, F/M 55+, F/M 65+, F/M 75+*
Long advanced technically difficult 7.9km: Open 5 (anyone) or

Fees*:
$15 per member-for-a-day individual/couple/family. Fee includes a map, rental of SPORTident timing card, rental of compass and whistle if you don’t have your own and beginner instruction if needed. Driver’s licence required as deposit for rentals.
$10 per annual member (EOOC/FWOC/OC) individual/couple/family. Fee includes a map, rental of SPORTident timing card, rental of compass and whistle if you don’t have your own. Driver’s licence required as deposit for rentals.
$5 per additional map for couples/families going out together.
$5 per Junior annual member going out solo.
Driver’s license required as deposit for rentals.
NB: no addition charge to go out on a second course, if there is still time.
* no fees for those pre-registered for the skills camp (full weekend or Sunday only)
Facilities: Waskehegan Staging Area has a shelter and better-than-average outhouses.
What to bring: compass, whistle, SPORTident card if you have your own. If not, bring your driver’s licence to rent them.
Hat, sunscreen, insect repellant (sunglasses?)
If it is hot, bring a water bottle, either to take round the course or leave it at the finish.
Extra socks and shoes for afterwards.

DIRECTIONS: 20km east of Sherwood Park
Easiest route is east along the Yellowhead Hwy 16 to the Elk Island National Park flag pole, then south down RR 210 for about 7km. Turn left/east into the Cooking Lake / Blackfoot Provincial Recreation Area, Waskehegan Staging Area parking lot. Registration will probably be in the shelter on the east side of the parking lot.
Exit 58 from the Anthony Henday, then east along Baseline Road (with shops and restaurants) which becomes Twp 530, to the T junction with RR210. Turn right and go south for about 4km. Turn into the Cooking Lake / Blackfoot Provincial Recreation Area, Waskehegan Staging Area parking lot. Registration will probably be in the shelter on the east side of the parking lot.
Exit 61 from the Anthony Henday, then east along Wye Road. Just after the road bends to the southeast, turn left onto Twp 524, crossing the railroad tracks. Continue east to the T junction with RR210. Turn right and drive south for just over 1km. Turn into the Cooking Lake / Blackfoot Provincial Recreation Area, Waskehegan Staging Area parking lot. Registration will probably be in the shelter on the east side of the parking lot.
Brookville Hall has a distinctive steep-pitched roof.
Brookville gas station is no longer a Shell station.
